Friends of Stark Parks - Annual Canalway Classic 5K Run - Towpath Trail - August 14th
The Friends of Stark Parks annual Canalway Classic on the Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail is northeast Ohio’s fastest certified 5K Run. The flat, shady course provides many runners with personal records. Cost per person is $20 through July 31, and $25 from Aug. 1 until Noon on Aug. 13. Race Day registration will be $30 from 7:30-8:30 a.m.Participants may pick up their race shirts and other materials—as well as door prizes—from 3-8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 13 at the Stark County Park District’s Exploration Gateway, 5712 12th St NW, Canton OH 44708 at the north end of Sippo Lake Park.
As in previous years, event participants will be taken by bus to the start of the race: at the corner of Rt. 21 and Navarre Road near the Marathon Gas Station. Walkers will line up behind runners and cover the same course as the runners. They’ll follow Commerce Street, west on Warmington Road, and south through the John Glenn Grove Trailhead, along the Towpath Trail next to the Tuscarawas River. The last leg of the event is on Wooster and High Streets in Navarre. Event proceeds support hiking, bicycling and horseback riding trails in Stark County.
AWARDS - The presentation of the Navarre Mayor’s Award to the person coming the farthest to run will be continued. All pre-registered runners and walkers receive a T-shirt. Other awards go to the Top 5 women & men runners, and the top female & male master. Age groups are awarded three deep: from 14 & Under to 75 & Over.
TIMING & SUBWAY CHALLENGE SERIES - This event is one of eight elite races in the 2010 Subway Challenge Series. Runners receive points based on their finishing position in a series of 60 runs and compete for prestige, prizes, and year-end awards. The race also is a ChronoTrac event, and runners will have a chip on their shoe to record their finish position and time.
