Hike and canoe along a scenic river. Stroll hand-in-hand through charming streets. Share over quiet meals. When it's time for a getaway, here's a great adventure for two.
Begin your day at 9:30 a.m. with a morning adventure by the water. Park just outside of town at Zoar Lake Shelter (434 West Fifth Street, Zoar, Ohio 44697). Remember to bring a pen and your Canalway Quest brochure (see below). The Waters of the Tuscarawas Quest
is a peaceful hike to the Tuscarawas River, passing ruins of past industries and canals. Allow about an hour. Along the way, you'll follow rhyming clues to a hidden quest box. Sign your name on the logbook inside. There is much to see on this Canalway Quest, making it a great start to your couple’s escapade.
Drive to the Zoar Store & Visitor’s Center
(198 Main Street, Zoar, Ohio 44697) for a two-hour guided tour. It starts at 11 a.m.; don’t be late! This unique town was founded in 1817 by a group of German Separatists seeking religious freedom. The Zoarites brought their distinctive culture to Ohio and flourished as a communal society. On the tour, a costumed interpreter gives you a look inside historic buildings and the Zoarites’ way of life.
After the tour, it’s time for lunch. The Firehouse Grille & Pub
offers a great casual dining experience next door to the visitor center. At around 2 p.m., check into the Zoar School Inn Bed & Breakfast
(160 3rd Street, Zoar, Ohio 44697) to drop off your luggage. This bed & breakfast has four themed rooms, each with a private bathroom, flat screen television, and an authentic historic twist. It's located in the heart of downtown and provides the perfect ambiance for your retreat.
Your adventure for two continues at Bolivar’s Canoe Livery
(11358 State Route 212, Bolivar, Ohio 44612) with a two-hour trip down the Tuscarawas River. Here you will canoe with your lovey on a picturesque waterway. Choose to sit in silent intimacy or exchange bubbly conversation.
Return to your room at the inn to change for dinner. Relax until around 6 p.m. The bed & breakfast is the perfect place to wind down and rest. There are many wonderful dinner options to choose from, whether it is local treasures or well-known restaurants. Be sure to stop at The Canal Tavern of Zoar
for dessert and drinks. The beignets with smoked coffee and Towpath Honey tavern made- ice cream are a treat you can’t miss!
Finally, if it’s local flare and possible scare you want, don’t miss Lantern Tours of the Ghosts of Zoar
. These are by reservation only at 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from May through October. The tour will keep you on your toes as you stroll through time. If you’re scared, reach out for your partner’s hand and walk side by side during this spooky venture.
Finally it is time to settle in for the night. Return to the inn for a romantic night for two. The Zoar School Inn Bed & Breakfast
serves an excellent breakfast at 9 a.m. with a menu that varies daily. Rise and shine to enjoy a lovely meal. Once breakfast is done, pack up and travel home; your couple’s adventure is through. I hope you had a great time in Historic Zoar Village, an unexpected place for an unforgettable retreat.
