Tuscarawas County Section

Welcome to the Canalway

– Tuscarawas County Section

Wandering with butterflies through Zoar Woods, sight-seeing in historic Zoar Village, exploring the grounds of Ft. Laurens, strolling through the gardens of the Warther Museum, or simply viewing the area by Towpath Trail or along the America’s Byway – the Tuscarawas County section offers you an amazing array of cultural, historical, recreational and natural fun!

You’ll find an ideal blend of pastoral views and historic sites from our country’s and our canal-era’s past, whether standing inside the tree at the heart of Zoar’s historic garden or taking a moment at Ft. Laurens Tomb of the Unknown Patriot.

Take a look below and head over to the Canalway activity of your choice - Bicycling, Hiking, Birdwatching and so much more!

Not quite sure where to start? Pick a Canalway Sampler and be on your way. Each Sampler shares a favorite Canalway outing from one of our local experts!

Traveling in the Canalway

  • The Towpath Trail offers fun travels by bike, by hoof (in some areas) and on foot – all in all, 81+ miles for you to explore. Start your journey here – at its southernmost point.
  • Driving through the Canalway is made easier by following the signed America’s Byway route to key Canalway locations.

Things To Do - Start your adventures!

Bicycling The southernmost Towpath Trailhead can be found here – at Canal Lands Park. It can be your first stop on an 81+ mile Canalway adventure north!

Questing Try our new outdoor adventure series. Three Quests are available just one county north, in Stark, and more are being developed for the area.

Photography A day starting with the butterflies and birds of Zoar Woods might be just the thing!

Bird Watching & Wildlife Area Naturalists have highlighted two of our area’s favorite spots for you to discover.

Family Outings Classic family fun can be had on the rides at Tuscora Park, bicycling on the Towpath Trail, or perhaps counting the buttons in the Button House at Warther Museum.

Heritage From our canal-era history through industrial roots - learn about these and more at the J.E. Reeves Victorian Home & Carriage House Museum. Or perhaps take a look at “Mooney” Warther’s carvings - recognized by the Smithsonian as “priceless works of art.”

On Foot There’s always more to explore, from the beautiful canal murals on the walls of New Philadelphia buildings to Ft. Laurens – Ohio’s only revolutionary war fort – and a Towpath Trailhead.

Rails The closest boarding station for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad is one county north, in Stark County. But there’s plenty of other ways to explore Tusc – including a visit to historic Zoar Village and its beautiful garden. Don’t forget to walk inside the tree!

Byway Driving The signed route for our America’s Byway has its southern terminus here - at historic Schoenbrunn Village. Hop on the Byway and head north - following the signed route to Warther Museum, the J.E. Reeves Victorian Home & Carriage House Museum and 110 miles more of cultural, historic and natural resources.

Winter Activities Check back – we have plenty of ways to make winter fun.
