Part mystery, part outdoor adventure, questing is sure to excite everyone in the family. With treasure hunts, stories, rhyming clues, and maps, this is an adventure that will get even the sulkiest teenager off their phones and into nature. Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
All aboard! Grab the whole family and enjoy The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad's scenic excursions through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. General scenic rides, event trains (like trivia or bingo rides), and food/beverage excursions run throughout all four seasons, though the weekly schedule varies. There are three main boarding stations between Independence and Akron — Rockside Station, Peninsula Depot and Akron Northside Station, with stops in between for those participating in the seasonal Explorer Program. With a variety of excursions at different price points, you’re sure to find your adventure and enjoy the beauty of the parks from the comfort of their train cars.
Voted one of Northeast Ohio’s top 100 destinations is Szalay's Farm Market. The market is an old-fashioned farm that offers fresh fruits and vegetables and local homemade goodies! Great for children of all ages (and the young at heart) Szalay’s in the autumn is a great weekend destination - with a fun and challenging corn maze, pumpkins and gourds, apples and cider, you will definitely want to bring your camera (and some cash! The market operates as cash only but has an ATM onsite).
Towpath Trek Exploration Program
Fall is one of the best times to explore nature and enjoy the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail and all its Autumn wonder! Hike or bike four sections of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail during the Goodyear Towpath Trek to receive your commemorative pin. This is great for the nature lovers or outdoor enthusiasts to view fall foliage from the trail.
For more on the current year's treks, visit Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition's website.
Last, but certainly not least, Summit County offers a bike share program in partnership with Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition and Summit Cycling Center. Ride, return, repeat! Simply visit Summit Lake NorthShore Park or Mustill Store Museum (operational hours vary) to borrow a bicycle for up to three hours to explore the nearby Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail or local connector trails like the 2.25-mile Summit Lake Trail.
